The center of Haitian metal sculpture is the village of Croix-des-Bouquets, where the clanging sound of hammers striking chisels against recycled metal is a constant music. To begin, the artist chalks his design onto a steel barrel that has been cleaned, sanded and pounded flat. Nothing but chisels, dies and a large hammer are used to cut and shape the piece and bring the sculpture to its ultimate beautiful form. To hang this piece, find a balancing point between design elements like a petal or a leaf and hammer one nail there into the wall. Use a second and perhaps a third nail to further secure and straighten it. Then stand back to admire your handiwork! With its clear protective finish, feel free to hang this sculpture indoors or out. To refresh the clear-coat, apply spray-on enamel once a year to outdoor pieces.
